The Process
Saying goodbye is the hardest thing we, as pet parents, have to do for our pets. It is our hope that your pet experiences a dignified passing in familiar surroundings and love within your home as they drift into a peaceful deep sleep and gentle passing.
Once you are ready your pet will be given an injectable sedative to allow for a gradual transition into a deep comfortable sleep. During this period it is encouraged for you to still pet and talk to your beloved pet, as that is the only thing they will remember during this process.
Once the sedative takes effect, usually within 5-10 minutes, we will ensure you are ready for the final medication to be given. If you need more time, please do not hesitate to ask. This medication acts as an overdose of anesthetic allowing for a peaceful passing. This injection may be given in a vein or into the abdomen, depending on your pets specific situation. With this injection, your pet may experience natural reactions such as - twitching, stretching, loss of bowels/bladder control, deep breathing. These are all normal responses which can occur regardless if your pet passed naturally or with assistance.
Once the final injection has been given, we will confirm that your pet has crossed over the rainbow bridge.
You will then be given time and space with your pet. When you are ready we will assist with any aftercare requests. If desired we will make a keepsake of your beloved companion in the form of an ink paw or nose print and/or lock of hair at this time. If cremation has been elected, family members may be asked to help bring your pet to the vehicle.
If semi/private cremation has been elected Gent Funeral Home will contact you directly to pick up your pets remains typically within 7-10 days of appointment.
